The artwork features a map of brain pathways in neon colors. The album title reportedly refers to the second law of thermodynamics, the study of the relations between heat and other forms of energy.
Muse are known for their unconventional approach to rock music, with singer and guitarist Matt Bellamy playing the most outlandish guitar riffs with the help of various effect processors, like for example the outlandish riff in their 2006 song "Map of the Problematique." On The 2nd Law , the band is apparently even taking things a step further and delving in to dubstep on one of the tracks.
Bellamy explained what they are trying to accomplish in an interview with BBC Radio 1, which was published on NME.com: "We've basically tried to do what Rage Against the Machine did with hip-hop in the 1990s and take a bit of the electronic world and dubstep and play it with real instruments. There’s only one track like that, the rest of it is very, very diverse."
