Celebrity website TMZ reports that Jones was taken to the Martin County Hospital in Florida after suffering a heart attack at his home.
Born in Manchester, England, Jones trained as a jockey before taking up acting as a profession. Cast in The Monkees TV show, loosely based on The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night movie, Jones quickly became the teen heartthrob in the group.
So popular were The Monkees that they out sold The Beatles in 1967 with a string of hits such as “Daydream Believer,” “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer.” Davy Jones was in fine voice at B.B. King’s in New York City on February 18.
