Mark Reale
Riot guitarist Mark Reale is in a coma after suffering a brain haemorrhage as a result of his continuing battle against Crohn’s Disease.

The band last week announced he’d miss some live shows after being taken to intensive care, and that his condition was critical. Now they’ve confirmed Reale, 56, the only founding member to remain in Riot since they formed in 1975, has been unconscious for nine days. The severity of his illness before his collapse meant he’d been unable to record his own parts on their upcoming album.

His webmaster reports: “Mark had a subarachnoid haemorrhage and that is why he’s still in a coma since January 11, when he was rushed to hospital. Mark is also fighting several other critical conditions, but he’s getting the very best here in San Antonio from gifted and talented doctors. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. I continue every day reading them to him. God hears all of us – ask for His goodness to heal Mark.”

The band recently explained: “Mark has been battling Crohn’s for most of his life, working and performing while enduring almost constant pain and the side effects of treatment for his illness. Guitarist Mike Flyntz recorded a major portion of the guitars on the album with Mark’s creative direction while he was unable to perform.”
