The Isle Of Wight County Press reports the island's community radio station - Angel Radio - was desperate for funds after lightning knocked out its receiver in July; a temporary receiver was used until a new, permanent one was installed last month.
Volunteers who run the station were shocked to receive a cheque from the Rolling Stone. Now, thanks to his generosity, Angel Radio, which plays music from 1900 to 1969, is permanently back on the air. Director and programme controller Bev Webster said they had broadcast an urgent appeal for funds.
"I don’t know if Keith listens to us on the internet, or maybe he tuned in when the Rolling Stones played the Isle of Wight Festival a few years ago, but we couldn’t believe it when we received his cheque in the post," said Webster.
A spokesman for Keith Richards confirmed the musician had made the donation but declined to comment further.
